6 Key Steps To Building An Online Business

29

Building an online business is not as hard as it may sound. It can actually be quite simple, and with services like word press to help get your website up and running, this makes it even easier to get started. The real struggle behind an online business, or any business in that matter, is getting people to actually buy the services and products you are trying to sell.

To go about making money from a business, you have to have people actually buying what you have to offer and there’s a formula for that. The formula is having a relevant service or product that creates value in people’s lives and great marketing techniques. Those two things are all you need to be successful.

So, why isn’t there more successful businesses?

It will take a lot of work to find and create a product or service that people will find valuable and want to buy. It also has to be something that isn’t already saturated in the market. Then, you have to find time and put the most effort into marketing your business through blogging, social media, and buying ads. This takes a lot of hard work and dedication, something majority of the people don’t want to consider.

Also, the business world is becoming very competitive, especially when you have a million businesses trying to sell the same thing. A question one may ask is; what does a person consider when choosing what business to go to when buying services or products? Well, they choose the business that they know more about and trust. Businesses gain brand awareness and trust through great marketing techniques, and by providing great service or a valuable product. To truly be successful in the business world you have to learn the art of marketing, which takes money and time, but that’s the cost of building a successful business.

Here, this article will give a little insight on some marketing techniques, with the internet being the best way to market, and how to turn your passion or knowledge into a profitable business. You can run a business from just having knowledge on a subject, and offering that knowledge to someone else who wants to learn it and you don’t have to be an expert on the subject. A very successful online entrepreneur Pat Flynn once said that you don’t have to be an expert to build a lucrative business, you just have to know more than the person trying to learn.

There are millions of ways to start a business and become successful at it, you just have to actually start one and learn from your mistakes, as well as others. One of the best ways to learn, is through others mistakes, and there are many people willing to teach you. I once sat thinking for months, trying to figure out what I could do to build a business and I stumbled across multiple people who built businesses entirely on what they already knew or learned. One online business that I came across was Location Rebel, which is an entirely location independent built business.

This business can be ran from anywhere in the world. The business consists of other’s people knowledge on how to build a location independent business, in which I even started a business from for myself. It tells people how to build a freelance SEO (search engine optimization) writing business, or how to write any type of content for money.

It has a community forum that allows beginners to chat with others who are trying to start businesses and people who have already done it, so you don’t have to go at it alone. They market their business by sharing people’s success stories and reviews, which is a great marketing technique that you should learn. Location Rebel generates revenue by offering a membership that includes courses and forums.

Through learning about other online successful business’s, you can generate ideas on how you can go about starting your own, and learn about someone who had become successful online. It is possible to create a business online, but you have to first ask yourself; What do I have to offer? The answer to this question can be challenging or easy, but once you find it, you can make money from it.

Begin by asking yourself these questions:

  • What am I passionate about and enjoy doing?
  • What do I excel in?
  • Can I teach it to someone else easily and effectively?
  • Do people want to learn what I want to teach? ( The best way to figure this out is to do some research on the market you may be considering to enter.)

Build the Online Business

Here is a step by step guide that can help you get your business started today.

Step 1

Come up with an idea for a product that you would love to sell or tell people about, such as Letterman jackets or cars. You should love to tell people about it because this is the type of product you would be excited about. You would always explain what the product is with enthusiasm, passion, and confidence. When you come across as passionate, enthusiastic, and confident about something, it is easier for you to sell it to people because they start to feel as though as they are missing out on something. If you don’t have a product in mind, jot down some ideas on what you know or love to do. Are you knowledgeable on a subject and believe you can share that knowledge in order to create value in people’s lives, such as playing an instrument or martial arts? Create a step by step course to help people and make money from it.

Step 2

Once you have something in mind, create your OWN website that you can market. Create your own website because it makes you look more creditable, professional, and you can add your won personal flavor to it. You don’t want a website that have a .wordpress.com or .BlogSpot.com web address. Make sure your website has a blog, so you can write about the subject you are knowledgeable in, whether it be playing an instrument or self-discipline. Blogging is used to rank your website higher in search engines and market your website more effectively. If you just have a product and you can’t blog about it, don’t. You will have to market your website without a blog.

Step 3

Create relevant content for you website and have the home page set up as a blog, or have a blog tab. When you begin to market your website or product, actively blogging will help attract people to you and your website. You will want to also have social media tabs attached to your website, this can allow people to share your blog posts, products, and website. When people share your blog posts, website, or products they begin to market to their family, friends, and acquaintances for you. If you do not have a blog on your website and it is just set up as an eCommerce site, don’t worry about blogging unless you find a unique way to relate a blog to your products.

Also, if you can, try to put relevant videos on your website. I say this because Facebook and YouTube are two of the biggest visited sites in the world. These two sites use videos to spread information and relevant content. Videos are a faster way to get what you want across and entertain.

Step 4

Share other people’s positive reviews and success stories. It’s important to have a quality product and service so that people write good reviews about your product or services. As your brand or services grow, don’t be afraid to spread your success. The word will spread fast, especially on the internet. This will be a very important step for eCommerce sites.

Step 5

Look into SEO marketing for your website and the best website optimization practices. SEO stands for search engine optimization and it allows your website to become ranked higher on search engines such as, google, bing, and yahoo. If you do not want to read and learn SEO, which is a lot of learning, then you can hire services that can help you optimize your website into whatever niche you want to be ranked higher in.

Step 6

Stay committed. Staying committed to marketing your online business and website is essential to building your business and being successful. You cannot decide to do actively market your business one week and put it off another. Consistency and determination is key. If you have a blog tied into your website, BLOG DAILY. Market daily and stay active on the social media networks. It will be essential to your success.

  1. Hi Lawrence,

    Wonderful post, indeed! 🙂

Yes, I do agree with you. Build a business, especially an online business is takes hard work and dedication. It’s not something that can be used successfully with ease. But although it is difficult, Success in online business can still be achieved. 🙂

I think a lot of entrepreneurs can perform up to step 5, but most of them will be stopped in step 6. 😆

Commitments in business is a tough thing. There are many online business owners give up because they do not feel achieve anything in the first years of their business. In fact, if they continue to do so with commitment, they will get the results they want.

Just like blogging, there are many blogs that born every day and there are plenty of blogs that lost it’s owners every day as well. 😉

    Thanks for sharing, Lawrence.
    Enjoy your weekend!

By the way, I found your blog on Kingged.

    ~Nanda

    • Yes, most will stop at step 6 because this is the hardest. Staying committed and disciplined is one of the hardest things to do and that is why so many have not reached the level of success that they want in life, in their careers, or in their businesses. Staying committed, taking consistent action, and doing more than many are willing to are the keys steps to success. Anyone can get started, but keep that same passion and enthusiasm as when you started for a sustained period of time is hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it!

  2. Hi Lawrence!

Great post man. You gave some valuable tips to help a newbie start getting things done, the right way, online.

I agree with everything you have said here, except one little tip. And that would be to “Blog Daily”.

You know, I used to think that I had to blog daily in order to build a successful blog online. And that little statement actually hurt me, more than it helped me.

It took me a long time to realize that I should not be blogging daily, if I don’t have AT LEAST 500+ people reading the blog posts I have already published.

You could be the best writer in your area – and you would still burn out after blogging every single day. It happens. And the truth is, not everyone is a good writer. So, telling a newbie online to create articles on a daily basis can actually hurt him, more than it can help.

The reason is because in order to build a successful blog online, you must publish very high quality, unique, and EPIC blog posts. And doing it daily can burn you out big time.

I learned my lesson the hard way. Quantity over quality will never be a smart move!

New bloggers should implement the 80/20 rule. 20% of the time creating very valuable, and epic blog posts, and 80% of the time marketing the heck of those blog posts.

You can test this out yourself, if you would like.

I have experimented this, and it is very effective. I, now, only publish one or two blog posts per week. And some weeks ….. I don’t even blog! lol

I am spend a lot more time marketing the crap out of my blog posts – and that is actually what is helping me boost up the daily traffic flow to my blog.

Now, I’m not saying that blogging daily is not good at all. Because that is not true. I’m just saying that a complete newbie will have a hard time creating high quality posts – and as you mentioned “the business world is becoming very competitive” … do you think a newbie publishing ‘alright’ quality blog posts every day stands a chance?

The successful bloggers I have met only publish about one post per week. The rest of their time they spend it marketing.

Marketing is one of the most important keys to a successful blog. And with that statement, it will help you have more time to craft the best blog posts you can ever create – because you will then only have to publish a few posts a month.

    You know what I mean?!! .. 😉

    Just my 2cents man!

All of the other tips you have sharedhere, to build a successful business, are spot on!!

Keep up the great work with you blog here!

    Have a great week! 😀

    • Hi Freddy,

I am glad that you liked the post and I really appreciate your feedback, but I have to disagree with you. You are absolutely right that blogging to NO ONE is not a great idea, but blogging and marketing daily to as many people as possible is a smart one in my opinion. I have researched some of the most established, biggest blogs and websites and they publish multiples times a week, if not daily.

Now, you say that it can burn you out? Well it can IF you do things within your day that winds you down, clear your mind and relaxes you. Everybody should find ways to clear their head and of course you can take a day or two away from blogging, but when you want something bad enough, you push forward and find ways to be productive.

Marketing is a big step in getting your website known, but having NEW blog posts on a regular basis will attract more people who may not have been interested in your older blog posts. You can always re-market old content as well, if you feel as though your did not market some blog posts well enough.

The creator of Mashable.com blogged EVERYDAY and was obsessed with attracting readers, and YES when I seen his interview, he said that he got burned out sometimes but he pushed forward taking breaks and finding ways to wind down before his next post.

Now, he has one of the biggest blogs in the world. You want to fill your blog up with quality content as fast a possible and market your ENTIRE blog as well as each individual post. We are capable of much more than we think we are when we are determined enough. You must be willing to do more than anyone else is willing to if you want to be more successful, and that includes blogging often or daily.

So, I continue to believe in blogging daily. It has proven research that backs up the fact that people or businesses that blog more, have more readers.

It also depends on the type of website or blog you have. For a blog like mine, businessinsider.com, or mashable.com, that is multi-niche, blogging more is better.

  3. Simple step by step guide. You will start from scratch in building and online business.

Deciding what product or services to sell would be difficult for others. Others use keyword search to know what that are best to sell. It will not help all the time most especially if you’re not an expert about that kind of product or service.

You’re totally right. You should pick a product that you love to tell people about. A product you’ve tried is the best. You can always find a group of people who are searching for the product you have in your mind in forums and all over the internet.

In creating your website, consider the design, atmosphere, and font/s and remember to keep it simple that suits your product.

All in all, it’s a useful article for beginners. A must read. Thanks for sharing!

    • You are right, deciding what to sell and what your service may be can be difficult, but finding something you really feel like you can be successful with is one of the keys to building a successful business.

I also agree that you should consider a design that fits you and your business’s persona and people should keep it simple and easy to navigate.

  4. There is no doubt that building a website an online business is not as hard as one may think.

The hard truth is that marketing this website as a business is tougher.

It is one thing to build a site and a different ball game to market that business for success!

The six steps shared above are practical and should be well applicable to online success!

This comment was shared in kingged.com as well.

    • No, building the online website and business is not hard at all. You can set up a business easily, but the hard part is making it successful through the right marketing techniques and taking consistent action in building the brand. You can easily get someone to set up an eCommerce site for you, or just a website in general, but you have to do a ton of work to blog and market it for success.

  5. Hi Lawrence,

I appreciate your post, but I think there is much more to it than that. I consult and coach with businesses every day of which some are just starting and some are very seasoned and experienced in how to create a powerful message that will resonate with an audience who is able, willing and ready to buy from them.

Some are offline coming online and others are online.

There are so many dynamics in play now and the biggest in my opinion is how mass marketing has influenced our mindsets and created a negative online space for our businesses. Ultimately, this mindset gets you thinking about yourself and talking about yourself and/or your products or services.

The problem is the audience either doesn’t care or doesn’t understand how to buy when this happens.

I have read, and heard from my clients experiences, that nearly 75% of businesses online are deeply frustrated by the lack of results they are getting.

This is tied directly to the reality that they don’t understand their business and how those who visit the website understand why they need to buy from this business. That traps the prospect into either leaving or buying solely based upon price.

    Here is the key stats:

    * Nearly 50% if people who visit a website leave immediately because of a lack of message.
    * It takes on average 10.4 pieces of content before someone makes a buying decision.

Think about how hard that is to do; 10.4 is a lot of content consumption and yet the majority of people only visit a website once.

It is not simple to just start a business and in fact online it’s going to get even harder as millions more websites are creating in the coming years. Seth Godin recently said we are in the golden age of target marketing and predicts that in just 18 months it will get much harder than it is today as technology shifts and more businesses and people come online.

The real differentiator is learning what business you’re “really” in and then learning how to message it consistently to multiple target audiences.

I could go on and on… but then I will have a blog in your comments!

I do appreciate your perspective and what you are trying to share Lawrence!

I hope you have an awesome week ahead.

    ~ Don Purdum

    • Hi Don,

I agree with you that it is a lot more to it in order to build a successful business, but this is just a beginners guide that gives examples of other people who have built successful online business’s such as Pat Flynn and The founder of Location Rebel.

This post just gives the foundation to what to do, but when it comes to the specifics such as how to market, what to market, who to market to, and how to attract people and retain them as customers, it is a lot more to it. I will get more into that in my later posts on the website.

I have learned from others failures and success’s and in this website, which I have only been marketing and working on for a month, I have tied my passion into a marketing technique that works. I will talk about it in later posts. But, it does take a whole lot of work, time and effort.

The people that you talk about who get frustrated from the lack of progress they are seeing online, may be people impatient when it comes to seeing results because it really takes alot of time for people to trust you and your brand and actually by from you.

The key thing to any successful business is to provide enough value in people lives, so that they put more trust into your brand.

This may be harder with just regular Ecommerce websites who are just trying to sell something. The only value they can really provide is the value from their products. But in this instance, it would be crucial to have positive reviews of your product and market that instead of blog posts.

There are a lot of things to learn in the business world, as you probably already know, but this article is just the foundation.

  6. Hey Lawrence! This post is wonderful 🙂 I really like your whole website too.

By putting step by step guides like this one you will help lots of people make that important decision to go for it. You made it simple enough that anyone with doubts can make that big decision which is huge. That’s the power the “value system” as I like to call it has.

Giving value and helping people as you do goes a long way especially with consistence as you mentioned as well.

Keep up the great work! Cheers 🙂

    • Viktor,

I am glad that you like the website and the post. I wanted to make the site easy to navigate and simple, so people can find the things they interested in easily.

As you said, giving free value in a consistent manner will take you a long way. People will start to build confidence and trust in you if you do this and they will be more inclined to buy from you. This could take a while to build and do, but that is the foundation to being successful online.

  7. Hey Lawrence,

These are foundaitional steps to start and build a successful business.

The hardest part which most agree with is maintaining it. There are going to be interference, obstacles, trials and tribulations that’s going to sometime take precedence over your business as well as set you back. But if the passion is there, then nothing can stop you.

Like Freddy said, the only thing I disagree with is blogging everyday. Just coming from my own experience and reading other blogs, you can still craft a successful business without blogging everyday. The most important thing is crafting blog posts consistently that’s of interest to your audience and promoting the heck out of it.

Also SEO is very important. I believe that you don’t have to apply it all the time, especially if you already have a nice following, but it does help to bring in organic traffic for newbies to come to your site.

Thanks Lawrence for sharing! Have a great day!

I found your blog post on kingged.com under business/finance category
    http://kingged.com/6-key-steps-to-building-an-online-business/

    • Hi Sherman,

I really appreciate your feedback and comments. I am glad that you agree with most of the post.

You are right that the hardest part is maintaining the type of consistency that makes you successful, not only online, but in every area of your life.

I do agree with you that you can be successful online without blogging everyday, but the more you blog relevant content to an audience, or market different content, instead of the same content, you MORE successful. Pat Flynn blogs every week instead of everyday and he is wildly successful, but he also has podcasts and many other websites to provide value to his audience. Then you have the creator of Mashable.com and Huffington Post, who blogged on a daily basis and they are more successful than Pat Flynn because the blog more and are able to reach larger audience.

You can definitely become successful blogging once a week, but you can also become successful blogging everyday or more than once a week, and in my opinion more successful. I went with blogging more and creating more value. You can still market everyday with different blog posts.

There is still proven research that shows that people and business’s who blog more, have more readers and customers. But, it should be epic content.

It also depends on the type of website or blog you have. For a blog like mine, businessinsider.com, or mashable.com, that is multi-niche, blogging more is better.

  8. Hello Lawrence! Loved all your steps to building an online business my friend they all are right on cue. The important thing is to gt started and NEVER QUIT!

You are not going to become an over night success, but if you set those goals and are willing to put in the effort to achieve them then you will, by following your above plan of course.

    Thanks for sharing..
    Chery :))

    • Yes, the most important and sometimes the hardest thing to do is to get started. Building anything worth having is going to take hard work, patience, and tenacity.

      Glad you liked the post.

  9. Hey Lawrence, How are you?

Love your blog post man. I totally agree with everything you had to say here. Very well written. I thought that the first part about products was great. Although I feel that it’s more important to join a line of high paying products rather than think of them or create them.

It’s much easier to find a vision than create something new and focus on the following steps you shared like seo for traffic generation. Many people get caught up on thinking they have to make and do it all which can lead to a long road of struggle.

Love this post man! Tons of value and content. Enjoyed and tweeted.

    • Hi Justin,

I am great man! Thanks. I am glad that you liked the article. When it comes to products, I feel that it can work both ways. I totally agree with you that joining a line of high paying products can be beneficial financially, but if you are not that enthused about it, many people won’t overcome the selling challenge. There are many people who have joined a line of high paying products and become successful, and then there aren’t. It all really boils down to how much work you are willing to put in, what works in the market, and your selling ability. People who are passionate about something they are selling, are more likely to get more people to buy from them because the confidence that they have in the product will influence many, and you will have more of a creative drive to sell the product.

You are right, it can be much easier to find something that is already in the market that is selling, but it can also be hard.

Still, I am glad that you liked the post and shared.

  10. Hi Lawrence,

Quite informative article you have there. Great steps you’ve outlined here though there are more steps to building a thriving business online. But these are a good start for entrepreneurs who are just getting themselves with this blogging stuff.

Loved your idea on staying “COMMITTED!” Even when you think things aren’t working as you hoped before, keep trying and soon you will reap the benefits of your effort.

    Thanks for this Lawrence.

    ~ Enock Machodi

    • Glad that you liked the article.

I believe that staying committed and focused is one of the biggest keys to any success. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  11. Lawrence,

Hey great tips mate! Building a website is not a tough task to do nowadays, but building a business online is one of the toughest tasks because the competition is very high.
In an offline business, you have a limited number of competitors but when it comes to online, you have to face global competition. In such situation, building a business that gives you good profit is very challenging task.

    • You are absolutely right Atish. Building a business online is very tough die to the potential competition, but the reach is also a lot more than an offline business. With an offline business, it is a lot harder to reach as many people as you can online. This makes an offline business harder in my opinions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  12. Hi Lawrence,

How very true, starting an online business is relatively painless today compared to about 5 years ago. WordPress, Joomla, Magento and more offer really easy to use solutions to kick off one’s online business. It’s building (growing) that business so that it supplies you a living that is the tough part.

IMO, 90% of online businesses are not making enough money to pay for their hosting and other sundry costs of keeping their online businesses alive and thriving.

    Loved what you said here:
“To truly be successful in the business world you have to learn the art of marketing, which takes money and time, but that’s the cost of building a successful business.”

Truer words have not been spoken.

Love your six steps Lawrence, simply laid out and lucidly explained.

Step 1: Choose a line of business one is passionate about. This passion will be reflected in all your do and is terribly infectious. Great for developing the business.

Step 2: Create your own (self hosted) website.

Step 3: Populate the site with great content. Use a Blog and add great content to the Blog constantly.

Step 4: Share people’s reviews (i.e. social proof) and success stories as much as possible.

Step 5: Get someone competent in On page and Off page SEO to handle these processes for the website

Step 6: Be committed to the online business. This can be hard at times, but what’s great is this is true for any business models.

Thanks for sharing this Lawrence. It made a great read.

    • Hi Ivan,

I am glad that you agree with what was written here. To be successful in business, you have to know how to market yourself, your products, and your services in a way they builds trust and make your brand likable.

The truly hard part is building the business, but anyone can build a successful business with the right marketing plan. Thank you for coming to my site and sharing your thoughts Ivan.
