Ray Lewis was an NFL Baltimore Ravens middle linebacker and now is one of the best motivational speakers. He was born in Bartow, Florida, and despite Lewis having a slightly rough childhood with his father being absent most of his life, Lewis grew up to be an all-American linebacker and wresting star at Kathleen high school in Lakeland.
In Lewis’s early life, he was incarcerated for drug-related offenses, but still rose to become a record-setting high school wrestler. Despite the trouble that followed Lewis, he had a knack for setting records and becoming the best. Ray Lewis has been selected to 13 Pro Bowls and named an Associated Press All-Pro 10 times. He became the sixth player to win NFL defensive player of the year twice.
He was also the first linebacker in NFL history to win the NFL Super Bowl MVP award on the winning Super Bowl team. Ray Lewis believes in hard work, dedication, and the personal commitment to being better every day. His life philosophies and his work ethic has led him to be considered on of the greatest football players in history. Here are 9 Ray Lewis quotes.
Every day of my life, I’m trying to find a different way to get better.
Ray Lewis became so great at what he does because he made personal decision and self-commitment to become better than the person he was the day before. He trained every day, he ate healthy every day, and found ways to improve himself mentally, spiritually, and physically. Find ways to improve yourself every day and make the commitment to never miss a day. When you are constantly working on yourself, you can only get that much closer to greatness.
I don’t train for football; I train more for a lifestyle.
Ray Lewis did not train for football. This meant that he did not only go to work out when his coach told him to, and he did not only take care of his body when he had to, he did it all the time. It was a part of his everyday life. He made self-improvement his lifestyle. Don’t only train to develop your craft, train to develop yourself.
I prepare so no one can take what is mine, no one can replace my mind, my heart.
Nobody can ever take away your will to win and your urge to reach greatness because those things lie in your heart and mind. Champions have heart and a sharp mind, and when you believe something is yours, you can only obtain it by preparing to take it. Ray Lewis prepared his mind and his heart to become a champion, and no one could ever take what he believed was his.
The hardest thing to do is work hard when no one is watching.
Everyone always want the public glory and are not willing to make the private sacrifices to obtain it. It’s hard to train and work hard when no one is watching because you don’t have an audience to glorify your hard work and sacrifices, but only through this can you reach the type of glory many only dream of. Ray Lewis knew that the hardest thing was to work hard when no one was watching, but he also knew that’s what you had to do to reach greatness. Work hard when no one is watching, this is the way to achieve your personal best. Train hard behind closed doors and you will be a champion when the doors are open.
My pain is my badge of honor.
Eric Thomas once quoted that he uses his pain to push him to greatness and Ray Lewis uses the same method, and that is why they are both great. So many people are afraid of pain and try to avoid it in every situation. Lewis went for pain in the weight room. The same type of pain that so many people run from, because he knew that only through that pain could he become stronger.
I’m pissed off for greatness. Cause if you ain’t pissed off for greatness, that means you’re okay with being mediocre.
If you want to achieve greatness you have to wake up every morning angry because you have not achieved it yet. If you are not angry at the fact that you can’t be considered great, then that means that you are alright with just being average. Ray Lewis was pissed off for greatness until he achieved it. He woke up every morning with a purpose and the tenacity to go out fulfill his purpose.
No matter the circumstances that you may be going through, just push through it.
Whatever your situation may be, if you are going through the storm, just keep going because the sun will shine one day. Ray Lewis was wrapped up in a murder case in the year 2000. He said that it was the hardest thing to watch his family see him have to fight for his freedom. This was a terrible situation to be in and Ray Lewis could have given up and quit, but he didn’t. He was not charged with the murders and came back to the NFL stronger than ever, winning NFL defensive player of the year.
We get one opportunity in life, one chance at life to do whatever you’re going to do, and lay your foundation and make whatever mark you’re going to make. Whatever legacy you’re going to leave; leave your legacy!
